In order to properly construct and calibrate the machine, many various measurements had to be taken.

The analysis was carried out as follows:

Scace temperature measurement tool with data logger

Machine warmed up for ~1 hour

Steam extraction after ~10 minutes

10 extractions in a row (25 seconds / extraction – 5 seconds pause – portafilter removed for 15 seconds – 10 seconds pause)

Water: room temperature

The results:

Here is an overview of measurements taken from the configuration of August 24, 2015:

On the left you can see the spike in the red curve (brew group sensor) from the heating cartridges. It’s clear why the Xenia H doesn’t require the heating cartridges to be continually in use. Although it’s the most accurate thermostat we could find, overshooting was inevitable.

It’s clear to see: the curve of the brew group never loses its balance; there are only very small fluctuations. And based on the Xenia concept (control of the brew water at the end of the flow) that means a lot.

For the sake of completeness, the following measurements were taken: espresso extraction (25 seconds) and steam extraction (30 seconds) alternating every minute — not surprisingly the Xenia passed. The heat bridge has a positive effect in this regard, and possibly also the somewhat reduced hysteresis of the pressostat.

When looking at these measurement graphs, it should be taken into account that the results depend on many factors, for example, the sensors and their position or the flow rate.

The measurements were taken with a so-called Scace device that makes it possible to record temperatures while extracting a double shot. In doing so, coffee grinds are simulated using a plastic block that has similar thermal qualities. Proper extractions with coffee are quite different however.

Despite slight variations compared to a real extraction, the measurements indicate that even under stress the machine can reliably maintain a temperature within certain limits.
